Founded by the Romans and later flourishing as the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona became a hub of Modernisme architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, led by Antoni Gaudí. Today it's famous for Gaudí's still-unfinished Sagrada Família, Mediterranean beaches within the city itself, and a lively tapas and football culture.
